Advice and Information Worker

My name is Michelle Alsop; I am the Advice and Information Worker. My role is to help and advise people on benefits, going back to work, tax credits, debt advice and housing.

I have a drop in at Millmead Neighbourhood Centre Association on Mondays and Thursdays from 9 till 10 and 11 till 12. I am based at Surestart on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Home visits or appointments at the centres, are also available at either MNCA or Surestart.

I run a group called Gingerbread which is a support group for single parents from Thanet; it is part of a national organisation and has many benefits of becoming a member. The group is run on the last Wednesday of the month at Surestart from 6 till 7.30 pm.

Children's Librarian

My name is Wendy Backhouse, I am the children's librarian here at SureStart Millmead. Also known as Bookstart worker.

I run the Children's Library every Weds. From 9.30am-12.30and 2-4pm. The library is situated in the community café so I have to be very strong willed not to give in to all the tempting smells that Julie our cook creates!

Although the books which I have are mainly aimed at pre-school children many books are perfectly suitable for older children and I have quite a lot who do come to borrow books.

I also have a Parents shelf with information books on topics such as child development, dealing with death, divorce, hospital, dentist, bullying as well as lighter subjects like cookery, face painting etc. etc.

In April this year I opened a second Library at Callis Grange school in our area. The school was very enthusiastic about this project and as far as I am aware it is quite unique. The library is open to the whole community not just pupils of the school and has taken off very well. The nursery visit regularly for story time and parents are asked to pick their children up from the library on that day, A cunning ploy to get them to join which seems to work as very few parents will refuse their child's plea for books.

As one of my targets is to increase Library membership I offer everyone who comes into the SureStart libraries the chance to join the public Library, they can sign up with me, I then send the forms in and the completed tickets are sent back to me to give to parents.

Midwife

My name is Margaret McKelvie, I am the Midwife.

"Everybody is referred to the Community Workers, but I make about 10 referrals to other SureStart Millmead team members out of about 100 births per year".

Pre-School Advisory Teacher

My name is Emma Mockeridge, I am the Pre-School Advisory Teacher.

"In school I would just see the education side. Here I can see the whole child. I know about Social Services, Speech and Language Therapy, Community Worker involvement and how all this impacts upon a child's learning. People are there to ask".
